Vixen: Season 1 Full Season – Review
By Ricardo ‘Rease’ Butler
I don’t know if you have seen the animated Vixen (click to watch) TV shorts, but they are short stories that pull together to make a 30 min longer episode, which DC is calling a “season”. Vixen falls in with the Arrowverse on the CW and airs online on CWtv.com’s sister site called CWSeed.com.
Many of the characters we know and love from the Arrowverse show up in this 30 minute first season episode like Stephen Amell’s Green Arrow, Grant Gustin’s Flash, Carlos Valdes’ Cisco ‘Paco’ Ramon aka Vibe, and even Emily Bett Rickards’ Felicity Smoak.
The show goes into developing an Arrowverse back story for her in this continuity universe. It pulls a little from her history in the comics as a fashion designer and that fact that she is from Africa.
In this first season/episode she is struggling with finding out who she is and where she comes from. That’s something we can all identify with. It’s the two most important questions to ask so that we may determine where we are going and what our purpose is in changing the world around us for the better.
She is confronted by some thugs who want to steal her magic necklace—Tantu Totem—given to her by her mother as a child. She triggers it by touching it and goes all zoo mode on her attackers.
Later she goes to a historian to see if he knows anything about her necklace. He knows more then he lets on to her. As she leaves his office, he calls Mari’s older sister, Kuasa, who ends up being the bad guy … er … or girl who wants to totem for herself.
Her sister’s henchmen attack her and eventually kidnap her all the way back to their Zambesi, a small village in the fictional nation of the M’Changa province. Her sister gives her a history lesson on their family, their nation, their village, and how Mari ended up with the totem which the sisters tells was chosen for her to wield. They eventually end up fighting for the totem as Mari gets the upper hand of her evil sister with the help of real animals from the wilderness.
Back in her home city of Detroit in the states, she runs into Flash and Green Arrow who she thinks is trying to attack her to take her back to jail, but they just want to help her. They are trying to find out if she is a metahuman to which she says the particle accelerator explosion had no effect on her since she was not in Central city the night it happened. She reveals to them that the totem is magic.
They offer help to her if she needs it. She tells them that she will figure it out on her own now that she knows who she is. They agree that she is confident and capable of fighting crime in her city and let her know that she can call for help anytime.
My Thoughts on this Story
This story was a great story which covered every detail of Vixen’s life without cluttering the episode. If gives you a great back story that is clear to follow and can be relatable to us all. As I said before we all struggle with some of the identity crisis issues that Mari is struggling with in this show.
This is a highly recommended show, even if this web-series is only video shorts that equal 30 minutes per season. I will be covering season 2 later.
Also this is the PERFECT time to check out Justice League of America – Vixen Rebirth 001 (2017). It is DC Comics rebirth story of Vixen. I got it and I recommend you check her out too!
