Justice League of America Issue 4 Doom of the Star Diamond (1961) – Review
By Ricardo ‘Rease’ Butler
This issue is from the Justice League of America: Silver Age Vol. 1 series.
I’m going to keep this short only because this though is a Justice League comic book it is more about a character named Carthan who is being punished by some other bad ruler named Xandor.
Carthan basically uses the JLA to make them think he is an enemy but in reality he is using the Justice League to destroy three machines across the planet as a means to free himself.
He baits the JLA into this game of cat and mouse by capturing Green Arrow, who by the way, is being recruited as a new member of the JLA roster.
The JLA splits up to stop the machines and the threats guarding them so they can find Carthan who they think is an enemy but he also needs to be freed from Xandor’s punishment. So he eventually captures all of the Justice League in this huge diamond that weakens each member of the JLA according to their weaknesses, except Batman who tackles him.
The machine that can free the JLA is destroyed as Carthan finally reveals that he’s the good guy who came up with the plan I just mentioned. So Green Arrow has to use one of his diamond tip arrows to his the star diamond in the right spot to shatter it and free the JLA before they are ended.
They help Carthan get back to space and then go to their secret hideout to continue the celebration of Green Arrow’s new membership.
My Thoughts on this Story
While this story is confusing at times it is still a fun read to that shows the JLA’s teamwork and how their earlier powers were used back in the silver age of comics that are sometimes not used in today’s stories from DC.
Favorite Panel of the Issue
This panel shows Superman using his X-ray vision along with Batman on his Batplane ready to breech Carthan’s ship. It’s a classic Superman and Batman duo tag team!
