Supergirl: Episode 209 Supergirl Lives – Review
By Ricardo ‘Rease’ Butler
Before I start, let me first say that the proper episode numbering for this review is actually called Supergirl: Season 2; Episode 9 Supergirl Lives. BUT since I am watching most of my DC shows online they are numbered differently. So do not email me trying to correct me with episodes and seasonal numbering because I am labeling this based upon either CWTV.com or by Fox.com.
Now let’s get started! This episode was artistically done by the great Kevin Smith who’s daughter was also in the episode. Yes, her name is Harley Quinn Smith and she plays the kidnapped daughter Izzy in this episode.
There are a lot of other stories that are going on in this story and I don’t want to get into them but the main message of the story boils down to human trafficking. Roulette played by Dichen Lachman (Daisy Johnson’s mom from Agents of Shield) is back and now she is working with some slave trading aliens from the planet Maldooria. The aliens have been posing as fake doctors doing blood work in a fake office that has an intergalactic portal. They are working together to kidnap healthy young adults.
The mother of Izzy comes to CatCo to make an appeal to Kara and her chief Snapper Carr to help finding her daughter because the cops seem to not want to help. So Kara agrees to look for her of course as Supergirl and gets some leads from Maggie Sawyer played by Floriana Lima. Also Supergirl goes to the DEO to get some leads from Winn.
Supergirl under her Kara alias takes along with her Mon El played by Chris Wood to the fake doctor’s office where they are attacked and then they go through the portal to find Izzy and the many others who have been kidnapped. They find themselves on the planet Maldooria, which happens to be a planet with red sun that strips them both of their super powers. They are then helped by a local to be captured as they surrender to find the youth in the alien prison. At this time Roulette reveals herself along with an alien Dominator from the 4 Part Arrowverse Crossover who buys all of the humans. They especially want Mon El for some strange reason, which we will probably find out why weeks later. I am assuming since he worked with the royal family on the planet Daxum. They probably recognized them because earlier when he and Supergirl get to the planet he gives a short history on the planet and reveals that Daxum used this planet to buy their slaves from.
Supergirl, while in the prison inspire the other humans to fight against the aliens as they escape. Meanwhile, on the other end, the DEO agents led by Supergirl’s earth sister Alex and Winn to infiltrate the fortress/prison. They find each other and get back to the portal. But an alien has managed to capture Izzy again and Supergirl runs back as the portal is ready to close to get her. Alex throws a sun grenade (since it’s also night time on the planet) so that it powers Supergirl up to stop the alien and the approaching Dominator ship.
As they make it back to earth later, Mon El is also inspired by Kara’s heroism and he now wants to be a superhero to help Supergirl like some sort of sidekick.
Again, there is a lot more going on in this episode that are side stories between James Olsen and Winn and Maggie Sawyer and Alex Danvers but you will have to watch the show to find out those juicy tidbits.
My Thoughts on this Story
The best part of this story gives us the whole purpose of this blog. It inspires us through great storytelling about heroism that makes us all want to be better. Supergirl submitting herself to the pain of the electric shock torture to keep everybody in the prison from harm inspired not only all those who were abducted, it inspired Mon-El to be a superhero. It inspired even Snapper Carr to be proud of Kara’s reporting skills and her belief in following her heart for the more important stories rather then compromising what people want to hear.
And that’s what I want this blog to ultimately be. I will later on start writing two types of book: First, superhero novels and second, how to be an inspiration and hero to others without having superpower books. I want to help you the read be all you can be in this world as guiding lights. It’s dark out there and we need some Supergirls, some Mon Els, some James Olsens as Guardian, some Winns, some Alexes, and some Martian Manhunters like YOU to change the world around you with very simple things you can do. You don’t have to become a full out vigilante like Batman to change your community, but there are some small things that we can do daily to make a difference in the lives of others around us like Supergirl did without her powers!
Thanks for reading!
